Grapefruit and Chocolate Dessert: A Resounding "Hell To The No"
I just had dinner at Range, which is actually one of my favorite restaurants, and had a great dinner. And then, after dinner, they did something very good and something very bad.
the very good: they gave us a free dessert, ostensibly because we go there often. I actually think it's because they overheard our discussion about how their dessert menu was super weird tonight (they change their menu on an almost daily basis.)
the very bad: the free dessert was one I was questioning in theory after seeing it described on the menu, and it turns out my hypothesis was correct: Dark chocolate crepes + grapefruit sections + pink peppercorn ice cream = a horrible combination. It looked bad, and it tasted bad. I mean really bad. Everyone at the table wholeheartedly agreed that it was a patently terrible dessert. The pink peppercorn ice cream was the least bad part, actually, so that was a silver lining.
I didn't take a picture because it was really dark in there but let me break it down for you:

So thanks for the free dessert, Range. Hopefully you noticed we sent our plate back nearly full and you won't divorce yourself from reality so fully in the future and delude yourself into thinking you have innovated some über-exotic and fresh combination that will put you on the map when really you have combined CHOCOLATE with GRAPEFRUIT in a monstrous way that is totally unworthy and unrepresentative of your absolutely fantastic food. Good thing I'm not a Michelin reviewer, eh? That 1 star thing might be looking a little shaky after tonight... no worries, considering it's the only major miss in about 10 times dining there, I'm going to pretend it never happened.

I know! Maybe there's someone out there who could make it work... the only person I would like to see attempt this feat is Marcus Samuelsson, but that's just because he makes lots of things that sound like terrible combinations but are in fact incredible.

When done right, dark chocolate + grapefruit can be an amazing, quirky little desert... the key is to use the peel--cut into thin strips, blanched (to get rid of the bitterness), candied, and dipped in dark chocolate. I originally found the recipe over at Smitten Kitchen, and ended up making orange, grapefruit, and lemon peels. They were fantastic (though slightly time intensive), and made adorable presents when boxed up with tissue paper and ribbon.

Wow, good point... totally forgot about that. I made some of those at Christmas, but without the chocolate. Here's the post!
